Google reportedly launching MP3 store sometime this quarter

Business Insider is reporting that Google will unveil and launch its own music store sometime this quarter. The launch is said to be already scheduled, and the major labels are starting to spread the word to their subsidiaries and partners.

If you recall, Google revealed its Music beta service in May, which allows users to store up to 20,000 songs in the cloud, but now users will be able to purchase and download tracks, too. No word yet on how it will work with the storage locker, but at the very least, as with Amazon MP3 and Amazon Cloud Drive, any song purchased from Google will almost certainly transfer instantly into a user's Google Music account.

While Google is aiming for a very extensive mp3 service, the labels and publishers do not feel that all of their concerns have been addressed just yet.“We want to make sure the locker doesn’t become a bastion of piracy,” one executive apparently told The New York Times, so obviously a lot needs to happen before this get finalized.

If Google does indeed get all the licenses and introduce a music store, it will be the first time it competes directly with third-party music apps, such as the Amazon MP3 store, Rdio, and Spotify on Android smartphones and tablets.

Hopefully, we’ll hear more on the upcoming music store and possibly a launch date during the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich launching on October 18th in Hong Kong.
